The Government of Maharashtra has appointed senior IAS officer Rajesh Aggarwal (1989 batch) as the new Chief Secretary of the state.

Aggarwal, who recently returned to the state after a central deputation, had been serving as Additional Chief Secretary in charge of administrative reforms and good governance. He is expected to receive a one-year tenure in the post. He takes over from Rajesh Kumar, whose three-month extension ends on November 30, 2025. Kumar had assumed charge as Chief Secretary on June 30 after his earlier retirement date was extended.

Aggarwal brings extensive experience to the post across central and state assignments. His past roles include serving as Secretary in the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Secretary of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, Additional Chief Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

At the state level, he has held several important administrative positions, including Principal Secretary of the Information Technology Department. His academic background includes a B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Delhi.

Known for his emphasis on e-governance and data-driven public administration, Aggarwal has been associated with national-level initiatives such as Aadhaar and Jan Dhan Yojana, and has also played a role in implementing digital tools, including DigiLocker and Jeevan Pramaan in citizen service delivery.
