The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared four major projects of the Ministry of Railways with an estimated investment of ₹12,328 crore, marking a significant step in expanding the national railway network. The proposals include a new railway line in Kutch, Gujarat, along with multi-tracking works in Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar, and Assam.

In Gujarat, the Deshalpar–Hajipir–Luna and Vayor–Lakhpat line has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of ₹2,526 crore. The 145-route-km (164-track-km) project, targeted for completion in three years, will feature 13 new stations and facilitate the transport of salt, cement, clinker, coal, and bentonite. The line will also strengthen connectivity to key cultural and heritage sites such as Dholavira, Koteshwar temple, Narayan Sarovar, and Lakhpat fort in the Rann of Kutch.

The Secunderabad (Sanathnagar)–Wadi project, spanning 173 km across Telangana and Karnataka, will be executed at a cost of ₹5,012 crore and is expected to be completed in five years. In Bihar, the Bhagalpur–Jamalpur third-line project, involving an investment of ₹1,156 crore, will add 53 km to the network within three years. Meanwhile, in Assam, the Furkating–New Tinsukia line will undergo doubling across 194 km, with a budget of ₹3,634 crore and a four-year completion timeline.

Together, these projects will cover 13 districts across five states, expanding the Indian Railways network by nearly 565 km. Planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the projects are projected to enhance freight handling capacity by 68 million tonnes annually. According to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, the additional capacity will be utilised for transporting coal, cement, clinker, fly ash, steel, containers, fertilisers, agricultural produce, petroleum products, and other essential goods.
