DPIIT and Ather Energy Join Forces to Accelerate EV Manufacturing and Clean Mobility in India

To accelerate the growth of India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry and strengthen the clean mobility landscape, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ather Energy Limited. The partnership is part of the ‘Build in Bharat’ initiative, championed by the Startup Policy Forum (SPF), a consortium of over 50 innovation-driven startups focused on deep-tech and advanced manufacturing.

The MoU formalises a multi-dimensional partnership aimed at strengthening the foundation for sustainable EV production and advanced manufacturing in India. Key components of the agreement include strategic mentorship programs for deep-tech startups, the development of infrastructure for startups operating within the EV value chain, and the initiation of joint innovation platforms such as the Bharat Startup Grand Challenge. The partnership will also involve co-hosted talent and skills development initiatives and provide startups with hands-on exposure through participation in national events like Startup Mahakumbh and industry-specific field visits.

The signing ceremony was attended by Shri Sanjiv Singh, Joint Secretary at DPIIT, and Tarun Mehta, Co-founder and CEO of Ather Energy. Both dignitaries emphasised the transformative potential of the partnership in shaping the future of India’s EV and clean energy sectors.

Speaking at the event, Shri Sanjiv Singh remarked that the electric mobility sector is entering a decisive growth phase in India. “Through this partnership with Ather Energy, we aim to catalyse the development of an enabling environment where startups can contribute meaningfully to EV manufacturing, battery innovation, and clean energy solutions,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Ather Energy’s Co-founder and CEO, Tarun Mehta, underscored the significance of collaborative efforts. “We are happy to collaborate with DPIIT to strengthen support systems for hardware and deep-tech startups. With policy support and stronger industry participation, this initiative can help founders tackle core technology challenges and scale high-quality products from India,” he said.

Shweta Rajpal Kohli, President and CEO of the Startup Policy Forum, also highlighted the importance of the alliance. “This partnership between DPIIT and Ather Energy brings to life the Startup Policy Forum’s Build in Bharat initiative. Unlocking the potential of India’s manufacturing sector through collaboration is key to building a globally competitive innovation ecosystem,” she noted.

The collaboration is poised to open new avenues for startups engaged in electric mobility, battery technology, and component manufacturing, offering them structured support to innovate and expand. By focusing on both innovation and infrastructure, the DPIIT–Ather Energy MoU aims to accelerate India’s transition to sustainable transportation while promoting self-reliance in high-tech manufacturing.

This initiative reinforces the central government’s broader commitment to climate action, industrial growth, and building a future-ready startup ecosystem. As India positions itself as a global hub for EV innovation and clean mobility, strategic partnerships such as this are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of green technology leaders.
