ICT services provider Sify Technologies has announced the appointment of Dr. Ram Sewak Sharma, former Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), as a Director on its Board. The NASDAQ-listed company stated the decision marks a significant step toward bolstering its leadership with deep-rooted expertise in policy, technology, and governance.
A 1978 batch retired IAS officer from the Jharkhand cadre, Dr. Sharma brings over four decades of administrative excellence, particularly in leveraging ICT to drive large-scale digital reforms. His pioneering role as the founding Director General and Mission Director of UIDAI led to the creation and implementation of Aadhaar—India’s and the world’s largest biometric identity platform. His experience is also chronicled in his book, “Making of Aadhaar: World’s Largest Identity Platform.”
Dr. Sharma expressed enthusiasm about his new role, stating, “I am happy to join the Board of Sify Technologies. In my professional ascent, I have always viewed technology as an enabler and catalyst for large scale implementation of social welfare measures. It is this experience that can help scale Sify’s services.”
Sify’s Chairman Raju Vegesna welcomed the appointment, noting, “As Sify scales, Dr. Sharma’s experience and ringside view of technology-enabled operations are valuable strengths from which Sify can gain. Sify will bank heavily on his mentorship as it strives to establish a leadership position across all its businesses.”

Dr. Sharma’s vast experience spans key roles including Secretary of the Department of Electronics and IT, and Chairmanship at TRAI. An academician by training, he holds a Master’s degree in Mathematics from IIT Kanpur, a Master’s in Computer Science from the University of California, Riverside, and a PhD from IIT Delhi. He currently also serves as an independent director on various corporate boards including Tanla Platforms and is associated with ONDC as Non-Executive Chairperson.
