In a key bureaucratic development, the Maharashtra government has appointed Rajesh Kumar Meena, a 1988-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, as the new Chief Secretary of the state. He replaces Sujata Saunik, who retired on Monday after a landmark tenure as Maharashtra’s first woman Chief Secretary.
Meena, who continues to hold the post of Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue)—a role he has held since 2020—brings with him over three decades of administrative experience across diverse departments. A native of Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur, Meena is known for his steady leadership, policy insight, and reform-oriented approach. His previous stints include key positions in the Departments of Tribal Development, Planning, and Water Resources, among others, where he played instrumental roles in shaping welfare programs and infrastructure policies.
Despite having just 61 days before his superannuation in August 2025, his appointment signals the state government’s trust in his ability to ensure continuity and stability during a crucial administrative phase. His short tenure is expected to focus on streamlining governance mechanisms, addressing pending reforms, and maintaining momentum on ongoing initiatives.

His elevation has sparked pride in his native Rajasthan, particularly in Sawai Madhopur, where locals are celebrating his rise to Maharashtra’s highest bureaucratic post.
With Sujata Saunik’s historic term concluding, Meena’s leadership marks the beginning of a new and decisive, albeit brief, chapter in Maharashtra’s bureaucratic landscape.
