In a landmark move aimed at enhancing energy accessibility and promoting sustainable development, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Alipurduar, West Bengal. The initiative, valued at over ₹1,010 crore, represents a significant step towards realising the government’s vision of a clean, affordable, and accessible energy future for all.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi described the project as more than just a pipeline infrastructure, it is a transformative step that brings essential government services directly to citizens’ doorsteps. He stressed that Bengal’s active participation in India’s developmental journey is not only anticipated but crucial. “Bengal’s development is the foundation of India’s future,” he said, underlining the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening infrastructure, encouraging innovation, and boosting investment in the region.

The CGD project is set to deliver Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to over 2.5 lakh households and more than 100 commercial and industrial units in Alipurduar and Cooch Behar. Additionally, 19 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations will be established to serve vehicular needs, providing an eco-friendly and economical fuel alternative. This will not only reduce dependence on traditional LPG cylinders but also contribute significantly to environmental conservation and household convenience.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the government’s achievements in expanding India’s gas infrastructure. From just 66 districts covered under the city gas network in 2014, the number has surged to over 550 districts today. This expansion reflects India’s rapid shift towards a gas-based economy, aiming for universal access to clean energy, even in rural and remote areas.

The Prime Minister also praised the role of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which has empowered millions of women by providing clean cooking fuel and improving health conditions. Since its launch in 2016, LPG connections have grown from under 14 crore to more than 31 crore, marking a major leap in energy inclusion.

He also referenced the Urja Ganga Project, which is revolutionising energy access across eastern India by extending gas pipelines to states like West Bengal. These developments are generating widespread employment, from pipeline construction to gas distribution, and strengthening industries dependent on clean energy.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated that Bengal has historically been a hub of cultural, intellectual, and scientific progress. To support its growth, the Centre has rolled out multiple major infrastructure projects, including the Purva Expressway, the modernisation of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port, and the expansion of the Kolkata Metro, among others.
The event was graced by Union Minister Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, West Bengal Assembly Leader of Opposition Shri Suvendu Adhikari, and Member of Parliament from Alipurduar Shri Manoj Tigga, alongside other dignitaries.
This CGD project marks a pivotal chapter in Bengal’s development and symbolises the government’s unwavering commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth across India.
