The Tripura government has appointed 1994-batch IPS officer Anurag Dhankar as the state’s new Director General of Police (DGP), replacing outgoing DGP Amitabh Ranjan, who is scheduled to retire later this month.
Dhankar, currently serving as DGP (Intelligence), brings with him a wealth of experience spanning over two decades, including a long association with Tripura, where he has served for nearly 16 years in various capacities. The appointment was made with immediate effect by Governor N Indrasena Reddy following consultation with the Union Public Service Commission, as stated in the official government order.

Notably, Dhankar had led the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the high-profile Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank scam, in which fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi is accused of siphoning off Rs 6,498.20 crore. His distinguished service in the CBI includes roles such as Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General, Joint Director, and Additional Director.

Beyond his contributions to the CBI, Dhankar has held key positions during central deputations, including Inspector General (Personnel) in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) in Tripura between 2013 and 2016. From 2003 to 2004, he was part of the UN Mission in Kosovo, and between 2016 and 2023, he served in various senior roles at the Bureau of Police Research and Development and the CISF.

Dhankar also held the important post of Chairman of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots under the Ministry of Home Affairs, further underlining his expertise in handling complex investigations and high-stakes policing.
His appointment marks a continuation of experienced and steadfast leadership for Tripura’s law enforcement at a time of evolving security and administrative needs.
