India’s estimated renewable power potential surged to 2,109,655 MW as of March 31, 2024, with wind energy contributing 55.17%, followed by solar (35.5%), large hydro (6.32%), and other sources including biomass, cogeneration, and small hydro, according to the Energy Statistics India 2025 report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
India’s installed electricity generation capacity reached 521.31 GW, marking a 5.43% growth over the previous year, with renewable energy sources (excluding large hydro) expanding by 14.77%.
Coal remained the dominant energy source, with domestic production hitting 997.83 million tonnes (MT) in FY 2023-24, an 11.71% increase over the previous fiscal year. The gross electricity generation from all sources rose 6.5% to 1,948,956 GWh, with renewable energy contributing 370,320 GWh.
India’s refining capacity stood at 256.82 million tonnes per year, supported by 23 refineries, while total primary energy supply (TPES) increased 7.8% to 903.16 million tonnes of oil equivalent (KToe).
The country ranks 4th globally in renewable energy installed capacity, 4th in wind power, and 5th in solar power, according to IRENA’s Renewable Capacity Statistics 2024. The government targets 500 GW of non-fossil-based power capacity by 2030 to meet 50% of electricity needs from renewables.
