In a major technological advancement, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has collaborated with Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI, a full-stack Generative AI (GenAI) company, to improve Aadhaar services. This initiative aims to integrate AI-driven voice interactions, real-time fraud detection, and multilingual support, ensuring a more user-friendly and secure experience for Aadhaar number holders.

AI-Enabled Voice Support for Better User Interaction

With the agreement coming into effect on March 18, 2025, Sarvam AI will introduce its AI-powered solutions to facilitate voice-based communication for Aadhaar users. This feature will allow UIDAI to gather real-time feedback on enrollment and update procedures, ensuring service quality. Additionally, the AI system will help identify cases of overcharging by service providers, reinforcing transparency and accountability.

Bhuvnesh Kumar, CEO of UIDAI, emphasized the organization’s dedication to adopting advanced technologies for public service, stating, “UIDAI is a people-centric organization. GenAI is the next technology evolution in UIDAI’s journey as a technology pioneer, building on our long-standing commitment to innovation for facilitating ease of living.”

Strengthened Security with Real-Time Fraud Detection

Security remains a key concern for UIDAI, and this initiative introduces AI-driven fraud alerts that will help safeguard Aadhaar holders. The AI system will monitor authentication requests and promptly detect any irregularities, thereby reducing the risk of identity fraud and unauthorized access.

Vivek Raghavan, Co-founder of Sarvam AI, expressed enthusiasm about this collaboration, stating, “We are honoured to work with UIDAI. This initiative demonstrates the power of AI in serving the public good.”

Expanding Multilingual Accessibility

To accommodate India’s diverse linguistic landscape, the AI-powered service will initially support ten languages: Hindi, English, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, and Malayalam. UIDAI has confirmed that additional languages will be incorporated in the future to further expand accessibility.

Ensuring Data Privacy and Security Compliance

Sarvam AI has developed a customized GenAI stack, which is securely hosted within UIDAI’s infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Electronics & IT, “No data will leave UIDAI’s secure environment at any stage of operation, ensuring full compliance with data sovereignty and security protocols.” This approach ensures that Aadhaar-related data remains protected while AI enhances service efficiency.

The agreement is initially set for one year, with an option for an additional year’s extension. This collaboration is part of UIDAI’s volunteer policy, which encourages partnerships with industry leaders. Experts from Sarvam AI have worked alongside UIDAI’s Technology Centre in Bengaluru to develop and implement this solution. The technology’s ownership will remain with UIDAI.

Future Outlook

UIDAI continues to prioritize technological advancements that enhance accessibility, security, and efficiency in Aadhaar services. The partnership with Sarvam AI is a significant step towards modernizing identity verification while maintaining high standards of security and user experience.

The introduction of AI-powered Aadhaar services marks a major leap in India’s digital identity infrastructure, reinforcing UIDAI’s mission to leverage state-of-the-art technology while upholding stringent data protection measures.
