Under the vast expanse of a digitally evolving India, a silent revolution brews, one that speaks not in words alone but in the language of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is a story of innovation, inclusion, and the unwavering vision of a nation determined to harness the power of AI for all.
A new mission took flight in the heart of India’s bustling technology hubs and quiet research labs. The IndiaAI Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet on March 7, 2024, emerged as a hope for a nation eager to lead in AI development. This initiative, anchored in seven foundational pillars, was designed to empower startups, researchers, and entrepreneurs, enabling them to build indigenous AI solutions tailored to the unique challenges and aspirations of the country.
As part of this mission, a Call for Proposals was announced on January 30, 2025. The response was overwhelming, 67 proposals poured in within a month, reflecting India’s determination to develop homegrown Large Language Models (LLMs), Large Multimodal Models (LMMs), and domain-specific AI models. These solutions, rooted in Indian data, promise to revolutionise sectors like healthcare, education, and financial services.

AI for Every Voice, Every Language

India is a land of diverse languages and dialects, each carrying its rich heritage. Recognizing this, the Government of India introduced the Digital India Bhashini Initiative, a groundbreaking platform using AI-driven solutions to bridge the language gap. With support from over 70 research institutes, the platform has developed 350+ AI language models, offering services like Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Machine Translation (MT), Text-to-Speech (TTS), and Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Whether in Marathi, Tamil, Assamese, or any of India’s 22 scheduled languages, Bhashini ensures that AI speaks every Indian’s tongue.

The Rise of AI Skilling
A digital revolution requires a skilled workforce, and India is leaving no stone unturned. Through the IndiaAIFutureSkills initiative, the government is training the next generation of AI professionals. Collaborations with Meta, IIT Jodhpur, and AICTE have led to the establishment of Srijan (सृजन), a Center for Generative AI, and the launch of the YuvAi Initiative for AI skilling.
Beyond generative AI, the government is integrating AI and cybersecurity training into existing skill programs. Initiatives like FutureSkills PRIME and the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme are ensuring that Indian professionals remain state-of-the-art in emerging technologies. With 150 undergraduate students, 48 postgraduate students, and 3 PhD scholars already benefiting from IndiaAI Fellowships, the nation is building a robust talent pipeline.
Expanding AI Infrastructure
AI’s reach is not confined to urban India. The government’s vision extends to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where 27 Data & AI labs are being established in collaboration with NIELIT. From Gorakhpur to Gangtok, Imphal to Itanagar, these labs will nurture local talent, ensuring that AI innovation flourishes across the country, not just in major tech hubs.
While AI offers immense possibilities, India is also taking measured steps to ensure it remains safe, trusted, and ethical. Guardrails are being built to address risks associated with AI, ensuring that the technology is used responsibly and for the greater good.
