Amitabh Nag, the Chief Executive Officer of the Digital India Bhashini Division under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), has been entrusted with an additional responsibility as the Director of the India Dataset Platform (AIKosh) and the Application Development Initiative at IndiaAI.
Nag shared the announcement through a LinkedIn post, expressing his enthusiasm about taking on this expanded role. His leadership at Bhashini, which is a key initiative under the government’s Digital India program aimed at enabling seamless access to language technologies, has been instrumental in advancing India’s AI ecosystem.
IndiaAI serves as the national portal for artificial intelligence and operates under the broader framework of MeitY’s IndiaAI Mission. This initiative is designed to accelerate AI innovation, improve data accessibility, facilitate collaboration among stakeholders, and ensure the responsible development of AI solutions.

Earlier this month, Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, launched a series of initiatives under the IndiaAI Mission. These efforts align with the government’s vision to establish India as a global leader in AI-driven solutions.

Among the newly introduced initiatives, AIKosh (IndiaAI Datasets Platform) plays a crucial role in supporting AI research and development. It serves as a unified repository, offering secure access to datasets, AI models, and other essential development tools. The platform incorporates advanced features such as AI sandbox capabilities, dataset readiness assessment, encryption-based security measures, and real-time filtering mechanisms to enhance usability and data integrity.

The IndiaAI Application Development Initiative (IADI) is another key pillar under the IndiaAI Mission, aimed at fostering AI-driven solutions across multiple critical sectors. These include healthcare, agriculture, climate change, governance, and education, particularly in addressing learning disabilities. Through this initiative, IndiaAI seeks to empower innovators, startups, and research institutions to develop scalable AI applications that can have a significant societal impact.
The government’s commitment to AI innovation was further reinforced through the recently launched IndiaAI Innovation Challenge. The challenge attracted over 900 submissions from AI solution providers, out of which 30 proposals have been shortlisted. These submissions span various levels of development, including conceptual ideas, prototypes, and fully functional solutions. By providing funding, mentorship, and exposure, the initiative aims to nurture AI-driven breakthroughs in India.
With his appointment as the Director of AIKosh and the IndiaAI Application Development Initiative, Amitabh Nag is expected to bring his expertise in digital transformation to these critical AI initiatives. Under his leadership, Bhashini has made significant strides in advancing language technologies, and his expanded role will further strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem.
By overseeing AIKosh, Nag will facilitate structured access to high-quality datasets, a fundamental requirement for AI model training and research. Meanwhile, his leadership in the application development initiative will help accelerate the deployment of AI solutions that address India’s socio-economic challenges.
