RailTel Corporation of India Limited (RailTel), a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, has secured a ₹288 crore contract to implement the Kavach anti-collision system across 71 stations. The project, covering 502 route kilometers (RKM) under the Danapur and Sonpur divisions of East Central Railway, is aimed at enhancing railway safety and boosting operational efficiency.

Kavach is an advanced automatic train protection system designed to prevent collisions by automatically applying brakes if a train passes a signal at danger or if there is a risk of collision. RailTel has termed this as one of its largest signalling projects, emphasizing its role in strengthening railway safety infrastructure.

“The Kavach tender, valued at approximately ₹288 crore, is one of RailTel’s largest signalling projects,” the company stated. It further highlighted that the technology will play a critical role in improving operational efficiency across the East Central Railway network.

RailTel Chairman and Managing Director Sanjai Kumar reaffirmed the company’s commitment to modernising railway infrastructure and enhancing passenger safety. He stated that RailTel is fully prepared to implement the indigenous Kavach technology, which will set new benchmarks in railway safety and operational efficiency. This project further solidifies RailTel’s position as a key player in railway technology and digital transformation.

The Kavach system integrates cutting-edge technologies such as radio frequency identification (RFID), GPS, and data loggers to monitor train operations in real-time. A major advantage of the system is its ability to ensure safe train movement even in extreme weather conditions, including dense fog, heavy rainfall, and high temperatures. The system enhances visibility and communication between locomotives and railway stations through a dedicated radio network, further strengthening railway safety.

The deployment of Kavach aligns with Indian Railways’ broader efforts to modernise signalling systems and minimise accidents, contributing to safer and more efficient train operations across the country.
