In a major development, the Chhattisgarh government has appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Arun Dev Gautam as the acting Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. The decision comes after the completion of the extended tenure of former DGP Ashok Juneja, who stepped down following a distinguished career in law enforcement.
Gautam, a 1992-batch IPS officer from the Chhattisgarh cadre, was previously serving as the Director General of Civil Defence while also holding additional charge as the Director of Public Prosecution. His new appointment signifies a crucial leadership transition in the state’s police force, where he will oversee law enforcement operations, public safety measures, and internal security until a permanent appointment is made.

Ashok Juneja officially concluded his extended tenure as DGP on February 3, 2025, after receiving two extensions during his service. Gautam was among the leading contenders for the position, alongside senior officers Pawan Dev and Himanshu Gupta. However, after careful consideration, the state government decided in favour of Gautam for the pivotal law enforcement role.
