Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several transformative railway projects across Jammu-Kashmir, Telangana, and Odisha via video-conferencing on January 6, 2025. These initiatives aim to boost regional connectivity, promote tourism, and fuel socio-economic growth in these states.

Driving Development Through Rail Infrastructure

Highlighting the importance of railways in India’s growth story, PM Modi said that modernising railway infrastructure is a key part of building a “Developed India” or Viksit Bharat. He outlined the four pillars of this transformation: upgrading railway infrastructure, enhancing passenger experiences, improving last-mile connectivity, and creating employment opportunities.

The Prime Minister also underscored the significance of achieving nearly 100% electrification of railway lines and expanding India’s rail network to connect even the remotest regions.

Key Projects and Their Impact

Jammu-Kashmir: Engineering Marvels Driving Prosperity

The newly inaugurated Jammu Railway Division is set to transform connectivity in the region, covering 742.1 kilometres of tracks, including the iconic Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail line. PM Modi highlighted key projects like the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. These projects represent engineering excellence and promise to enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and unlock economic opportunities in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Odisha: Strengthening Rail Infrastructure for Trade and Tourism

In Odisha, PM Modi laid the foundation for the Rayagada Railway Division, a project expected to strengthen the state’s railway network, particularly in South Odisha. With an investment exceeding ₹70,000 crore in ongoing railway projects and the establishment of seven Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals, Odisha is positioning itself as a major hub for international trade and tourism. These projects aim to benefit tribal communities and stimulate local economic growth.

Telangana: Modern Terminal to Ease Congestion

The Charlapalli New Terminal Station in Telangana was inaugurated as a state-of-the-art facility with modern amenities, solar-powered operations, and seamless connectivity to the Outer Ring Road. This terminal is expected to ease congestion at existing railway stations like Secunderabad, Hyderabad, and Kachiguda while spurring regional development and making travel more convenient for residents.

Transforming India’s Railways

PM Modi emphasized that India’s railways are undergoing a complete transformation. The country is investing in Dedicated Freight Corridors to reduce pressure on passenger lines, manufacturing make-in-India modern coaches, and redevelop stations with advanced facilities. Initiatives like solar-powered stations and “One Station, One Product” stalls are also creating jobs and boosting local industries.

The Prime Minister highlighted that modern rail projects are enhancing employment across sectors, from manufacturing to raw material demand. The Gati Shakti University, established to enhance railway-specific skills, is another step towards making the sector future-ready.

Infrastructure for a Growing India

Beyond railways, PM Modi noted India’s broader infrastructure development. The number of airports has grown from 74 in 2014 to over 150, and metro services have expanded from five cities to 21. These initiatives reflect India’s focus on enhancing ease of living and doing business.

Vision for the Future

Concluding the event, PM Modi expressed confidence in India’s collective efforts to build a stronger, more connected nation. He congratulated the citizens of Jammu-Kashmir, Odisha, and Telangana for these milestones and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering sustainable, people-centric infrastructure.
