India is emerging as a global leader in green hydrogen and renewable energy, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi emphasised during his visit to a floating solar plant at the Omkareshwar Dam in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district on Saturday. He highlighted significant strides in the green energy sector, including the launch of a tender for the world’s largest green ammonia demonstration project.

Joshi underscored India’s advancements in offshore wind power projects, with tenders already floated in Gujarat. “Offshore wind power involves installing windmills in the sea, which necessitates the development and upgradation of ports and transmission infrastructure,” he explained. He added that preliminary work on geothermal energy projects is also underway, signalling a broad-based approach to clean energy innovation.

Praising the floating solar plant at Omkareshwar Dam, which generates 278 megawatts of power, Joshi called it a model for sustainable energy production. “This plant supplies electricity to the Delhi Metro. We need to explore similar opportunities in other parts of the country with untapped potential. While there is a capacity of 90 gigawatts for power generation in similar projects, only a fraction of this has been utilised,” he remarked.

The minister encouraged energy experts, state officials, and leaders from regions with large dams to visit the Omkareshwar project and replicate its success elsewhere. He stressed that achieving India’s ambitious renewable energy goals—500 gigawatts of non-fossil energy by 2030 and 1,800 gigawatts by 2047—requires such innovative projects to be scaled up nationwide.

“A revolution is unfolding in solar energy, and India is positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy,” Joshi asserted. “While meeting the growing electricity demands, it is imperative that we rely on sustainable energy sources to secure a cleaner future.”
