President Donald Trump has nominated Dr. Darío Gil, Director of IBM Research, for the position of Undersecretary for Science and Innovation at the U.S. Department of Energy. The announcement was made on Thursday via Trump’s official Truth Social account and later shared on X.

“Darío is a brilliant businessman and scientist with an exemplary record,” Trump stated, highlighting Gil’s role as Chairman of the National Science Board and his tenure as Senior Vice President and Director at IBM Research. During his first term, Trump also noted Gil’s previous service on the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

Dr. Gil has been a prominent advocate for emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and quantum information science. His leadership at IBM Research has focused on these critical areas, and he has publicly endorsed open-source AI model weights, particularly in government research initiatives. During his tenure on the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, he chaired a subcommittee that emphasized increased U.S. investment in critical and emerging technologies.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna expressed strong support for Gil’s nomination, describing him as a staunch advocate for science and technology. “Darío is a great champion of innovation as a catalyst for progress in the U.S. and globally,” Krishna wrote in a LinkedIn post. “We are honoured and supportive of his selection and look forward to assisting him through the confirmation process.”
