Bhuvnesh Kumar, an accomplished IAS officer from the 1995 Uttar Pradesh cadre, has officially assumed charge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). The announcement, made on Wednesday, also confirmed that Kumar will continue to serve as an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

This leadership transition sees Kumar succeeding Amit Agrawal, who has taken on the role of Secretary in the Department of Pharmaceuticals. As the new CEO of UIDAI, Kumar is set to oversee the Aadhaar system, a cornerstone of India’s digital identity infrastructure, which impacts millions of citizens and supports numerous government and private sector initiatives.
Kumar brings over two decades of experience in governance and administration, coupled with a deep understanding of technology and policy. He is a graduate and gold medalist from the National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra, and has held several high-profile positions both at the national and state levels.

At the central level, Kumar served as Joint Secretary in MeitY, where he played a key role in advancing technology-driven governance. His expertise in managing large-scale projects is expected to further strengthen UIDAI’s mission of providing secure and efficient digital identity solutions.

In his home cadre, Kumar held significant roles across multiple departments. As Principal Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Fisheries, he implemented transformative policies to enhance these sectors. His tenure also included roles as Secretary in the Departments of Finance, MSME, and Technical Education, where he contributed to driving growth and development. Additionally, his experience as Divisional Commissioner in the Department of Land Revenue reflects his capability to manage complex governance challenges effectively.

Under Kumar’s leadership, UIDAI is poised to strengthen its role in India’s digital transformation. His immediate priorities are likely to focus on enhancing the security, scalability, and accessibility of the Aadhaar ecosystem. This includes improving user experience, promoting innovation in service delivery, and ensuring seamless integration of Aadhaar with various government schemes and private sector applications.
