Sushil Kumar, Managing Director, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL), recently shed light on how technology is shaping the future of urban mobility in India at eUttar Pradesh Summit. His address delved into UPMRCL’s innovative use of IT solutions to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency, underscoring its commitment to redefining public transit systems in Uttar Pradesh and beyond.

National Common Mobility Card

At the forefront of UPMRCL’s technological advancements is the introduction of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), positioning it as India’s first metro service to adopt this interoperable ticketing system. This innovation allows passengers to seamlessly use a single card across seven metro systems nationwide, including in Delhi and Mumbai, heralding a new era of convenience and integration in urban transit.

Ensuring Safety and Community Welfare
Security and community engagement are pivotal to UPMRCL’s mission. Comprehensive CCTV integration across trains and stations provides a secure environment for passengers. Beyond ensuring safety, these measures have facilitated the recovery and return of valuables, including ₹35 lakh in cash, gold worth ₹65 lakh, and numerous electronic devices over the last seven years.

In an exemplary show of community-focused service, the metro system has also reunited runaway children with their families. Such initiatives highlight the human-centered approach underpinning UPMRCL’s operations, a focus that has earned it national recognition for passenger satisfaction.

Driving Operational Excellence

UPMRCL leverages advanced IT tools to enhance its operational framework. Computerized project management and maintenance systems, coupled with state-of-the-art platforms like SAP, streamline construction and maintenance activities. These systems not only ensure efficiency but also improve transparency and reliability in service delivery.

Actionable Insights and the Road Ahead
The integration of IT in public transit is not just about technological innovation but also about fostering community trust and operational transparency. He predicts that solutions like the NCMC will set benchmarks for future public transit projects, promoting a standardized, passenger-centric approach across India.
