To enhance tourism and foster balanced regional development, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has approved 40 projects totalling ₹3,295.76 crores for the development of lesser-known tourism destinations across 23 states. This initiative, designed to alleviate pressure on popular tourist destinations, aims to increase the appeal of underexplored locations while promoting sustainability and cultural preservation.
Strategic Focus on Tourism Growth
The initiative, under the Special Assistance to States/Union Territories for Capital Investment (SASCI) Scheme, aligns with the Ministry’s goal to create iconic tourist centres on a global scale. The projects involve long-term, interest-free loans to states for 50 years, fostering significant capital investments to enhance public infrastructure, boost local economies, and create employment opportunities. States are expected to complete these projects within two years.

The government’s investment in these projects aims to act as a catalyst for economic growth, attracting private sector participation to further enhance infrastructure and local amenities. A strong emphasis is being placed on community-based tourism to empower local populations while preserving cultural heritage. Sustainable practices and advanced technologies will also be integrated into these projects to ensure long-term viability and innovation in tourism management.
