The Indian government has announced significant progress in its AgriStack initiative, which aims to digitally empower farmers and revolutionize the agriculture sector. As of December 11, 2024, over 37.17 lakh farmer identity cards have been generated, according to Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
The “Farmer ID,” a critical component of the AgriStack project, integrates comprehensive data on farmers, including demographic details, land ownership, and crops cultivated. This digital identity facilitates farmers’ access to various government benefits, including agricultural credit, insurance schemes, and procurement processes.
Minister Chouhan emphasized that the creation of these digital identities is part of a broader effort to modernize India’s agricultural infrastructure. He revealed that the Digital Crop Survey (DCS), a vital initiative under the project, has been conducted in 436 districts during the kharif season of 2024. The DCS aims to enhance data accuracy on crop patterns and assist in planning and policy-making.

To ensure effective implementation of the AgriStack project, the government has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with 22 states and Union Territories. These agreements outline collaboration on the development and use of Digital Public Infrastructure for Agriculture, a key pillar of the project.

AgriStack comprises three foundational registries that serve as the backbone of this digital transformation. These include:

- Farmers’ Registry: A centralized database containing verified details of farmers.
- Geo-Referenced Village Maps: Digital maps that provide precise geographical data for better resource allocation and planning.
- Crop Sown Registry: A record of crops cultivated, and maintained to ensure accurate data collection and analysis.
These registries are developed and maintained by the respective state governments and Union Territories.
The minister also highlighted the extensive consultations undertaken with states, other government ministries, financial institutions, and stakeholders through national and regional conferences. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure the smooth rollout of the AgriStack project and address the diverse needs of India’s agricultural landscape.
