Green Hydrogen

The Government of India has officially announced a call for proposals aimed at the establishment of Centres of Excellence (CoEs) dedicated to Research and Development (R&D) in the field of Green Hydrogen. This initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) releasing the call for proposals (CfP) on November 4, 2024.

The objective of this initiative is to create world-class Centres of Excellence throughout India that will drive innovation, promote sustainability, and ultimately enhance the nation’s energy independence in the long term. These CoEs are anticipated to play a pivotal role in facilitating advancements in technologies related to the production, storage, and utilization of Green Hydrogen, thereby accelerating the transition toward a low-carbon economy.

As focal points for cutting-edge research, these Centres of Excellence will not only contribute to the advancement of Green Hydrogen technologies but will also emphasize skill development and the dissemination of knowledge. The CoEs are designed to promote collaboration among various stakeholders, including industry, academia, and governmental bodies, to drive innovations that enhance process efficiencies and enable the development of new products. By aggregating expertise and leveraging resources, these centres aim to fortify the entire Green Hydrogen ecosystem within the country.

The MNRE had previously established guidelines on March 15, 2024, for the implementation of the R&D Scheme under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These guidelines can be accessed through official government channels. It is expected that a combination of public and private entities, including research institutions and universities, will form strategic partnerships to submit comprehensive proposals in response to this call for proposals. The Government has allocated a substantial budget of ₹100 crores for the establishment of such Centres under the Green Hydrogen Mission.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, which was launched on January 4, 2023, carries a total outlay of ₹19,744 crores allocated for the period up to the fiscal year 2029-30. This mission is integral to India’s broader objective of achieving self-reliance through clean energy solutions and aims to serve as a benchmark for the global transition toward sustainable energy practices. By significantly decarbonizing the economy, reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports, and positioning India as a frontrunner in Green Hydrogen technology and market leadership, the mission aspires to create a sustainable energy future for the nation and the world.
