Renewable Energy

Gujarat’s renewable energy sector is developing rapidly, thanks to Government initiatives that partner with private market players. Essar Group is one such renowned name that has made an immense contribution to expanding the state’s renewable energy capacity.

Essar, a pivotal player in India’s growth narrative, is making significant advancements toward a sustainable future with its transformative energy initiatives.

Essar Renewables is at the forefront of this transition in the energy sector, pioneering innovative green technologies and upholding sustainable practices. The company is embarking on an ambitious journey within the sustainable energy landscape, backed by a diverse and integrated portfolio. Its strategy includes offering a comprehensive suite of services, including Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) and inhouse Operations and Maintenance (O&M) support.

Essar Renewables aims to build 10 GW of renewable capacity over the next five years. Of this, approximately 4 GW will be dedicated to the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives in Salaya, Gujarat. Essar’s Salaya port connectivity will help to export these derivatives to the UK market. The remaining 6 GW will focus on solar, wind, and energy storage projects aimed at meeting energy demands while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

A notable achievement for Essar Renewables is securing nearly 450 MWp solar capacity through its first competitive bid conducted by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN). This milestone is a crucial step in advancing sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, the company is actively working on cutting-edge energy storage solutions and pursuing Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) tenders.

Globally, Essar is investing US$3.0 billion in the UK over the next five years to develop low-carbon energy transition projects. This investment aims to reduce around 3.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, approximately 20 per cent of the total industrial emissions in North West England. Key initiatives include EET Fuels, a leading low-carbon process refinery; EET Hydrogen, which is developing 1.35 GW of blue hydrogen with future plans to expand to 4 GW and green hydrogen; EET Hydrogen Power, focusing on Europe’s first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plant; and Stanlow Terminals Ltd, advancing energy storage and pipeline infrastructure.

Additionally, in the energy sector, Essar Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Ltd (EOGEPL), India’s largest producer of coal bed methane, contributes 65 per cent to the nation’s total CBM production. The company aims to increase its share of the country’s gas production to 5 per cent within the next five years.

Simultaneously, Essar Power is advancing its energy projects with a focus on expansion and sustainability. The company is enhancing its 1,200 MW Salaya-Dev Bhoomi Dwarka Thermal Power Plant with an additional 1,600 MW to address Gujarat’s base-load power needs.

Essar’s initiatives reflect its commitment to a cleaner, greener future and represent a significant step toward sustainable energy practices both in India and internationally.
