Indian Railways has formalized its partnership with the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, and Communications (DETEC) of Switzerland by signing a renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement was executed via a virtual ceremony and received the necessary approvals from the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of External Affairs.
The MoU aims to strengthen technical cooperation in key areas, including technology sharing, track maintenance, management, and construction, thereby aligning with the Indian government’s commitment to modernizing the railway system. Union Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored the significance of this collaboration, stating that it provides a comprehensive framework for enhancing Indian Railways‘ operational capabilities.
Federal Councilor Albert Roesti remarked that the advanced railway technology from Switzerland would contribute to improving operational efficiency, safety standards, service quality, and infrastructure development within Indian Railways.
This renewed agreement builds upon the original MoU signed on August 31, 2017, which was valid for five years and focused on several critical areas of collaboration, including:

- Traction Rolling Stock
- Electric Multiple Units (EMU) and Train Sets
- Traction Propulsion Equipment
- Freight and Passenger Cars
- Tilting Trains
- Railway Electrification Equipment
- Train Scheduling and Operational Improvements
- Railway Station Modernization
- Multimodal Transport Solutions
- Tunneling Technology
Before the MoU signing, a Joint Working Group (JWG) was established to facilitate collaboration between representatives of Indian Railways and Swiss Railways. The JWG has convened multiple meetings, with the most recent occurring on October 11, 2023. During these discussions, significant investment opportunities in the Indian railway sector were highlighted, emphasizing the ongoing capital expenditure initiatives.
