India’s wind energy sector is at a critical juncture, with industry leaders calling for consistent policy backing to help the country become a global hub for renewable energy production. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday ahead of the upcoming “Windergy India 2024” event in Chennai, Suzlon Group CEO JP Chalasani highlighted the nation’s potential for significant growth in the wind energy segment.
“With the current installed wind energy capacity at over 48 GW, India has the potential to add 8 GW of capacity annually,” Chalasani said. He emphasized that strong policy support—such as strengthening the Registered List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM) requirements—along with a focus on domestic manufacturing and innovation, could position India as a leader in global renewable energy production.
Amit Kansal, CEO and Managing Director of Senvion Wind Technology, noted that hybrid wind-solar projects are transforming India’s renewable landscape. “The government’s goal of achieving 140 GW of wind power by 2030 and recent investments exceeding $10 billion annually in renewable energy are vital for meeting India’s renewable energy targets and promoting sustainable development,” Kansal stated.

However, industry leaders acknowledged key challenges that need to be addressed to fully unlock India’s wind energy potential. Land availability for wind projects was identified as a significant bottleneck. “While India is ready to scale up its capacities, overcoming issues such as land acquisition is crucial for the execution of projects,” Chalasani added.

Parag Sharma, President of the Wind Independent Power Producers Association (WIPPA), stressed the need for decisive policy measures. “Timely power purchase agreements (PPAs) and strategic collaborations are essential to attract investments and drive capacity expansion. Cost-reflective tariffs and market mechanisms will ensure wind energy plays a major role in India’s renewable future,” Sharma said.
The remarks come ahead of Windergy India 2024, which will take place from October 23-25 at the Chennai Trade Centre. The event is expected to attract over 300 exhibitors from around the world and will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to drive advancements in wind energy, aligning with India’s ambitious renewable energy goals.
