India is experiencing significant growth in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, driven by the government’s ambitious goals to promote electric mobility. The country aims to achieve 30% electric vehicle penetration by 2030, significantly reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, lowering carbon emissions, and improving air quality. This vision is
supported by various government policies, environmental concerns, and technological advancements, positioning India as a leader in the global shift towards sustainable transportation.
NATION’S MOMENTUM TOWARDS EVS
The Indian government’s push for EVs is evident in the extensive policies and incentives designed to make electric vehicles more accessible and attractive to consumers and manufacturers alike. Through initiatives like the National Electric Mobility Plan (NEMMP) 2020 and the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme, the government aims to encourage both consumers and manufacturers to transition to EVs. The FAME II scheme, in particular, has allocated Rs. 10,000 crore to provide incentives for EV purchases, R&D, and the development of charging infrastructure, reflecting a strong national momentum towards EV adoption. The “GO Electric” campaign, launched in 2021, is a notable example of efforts to raise awareness and promote EV
adoption across the country. Gujarat is emerging as a key player in India’s EV sector, rapidly expanding the state’s EV ecosystem. In 2023, EV sales increased by 28% compared to the previous year, reaching 88,619 units—an astonishing 714% growth from the 10,885 units sold in 2021.
