Solar Plant

Dharamshala is taking a significant step towards sustainability by establishing its first solar power plant under the Smart City Project. Located in Upper Dadi, Ward No. 14, this solar plant will produce 600 kilowatts of electricity daily, resulting in a total output of nine lakh units annually. The project, constructed at a cost of Rs 4.2 crore, is expected to substantially reduce the city’s reliance on traditional power sources while also generating revenue for the Municipal Corporation.

The electricity generated from this plant will be sold to the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, bringing in an annual income of Rs 28 to 30 lakh. This additional revenue will help offset Dharamshala’s electricity expenses, particularly the Rs 20 lakh spent annually on street lighting. The plant is expected to be fully operational by November.

In addition to this solar project, solar panels have been installed on the rooftops of more than a dozen municipal office buildings as part of the broader Smart City initiative. This has already started to alleviate the electricity costs for these offices, providing a cleaner and more sustainable energy alternative.

The shift to solar energy is a crucial milestone in Dharamshala’s journey toward becoming a greener city. The Municipal Corporation’s investment in renewable energy will not only reduce the city’s carbon emissions but also lead to financial savings and contribute to environmental preservation. By successfully implementing this solar plant, Dharamshala is setting an example for other cities in Himachal Pradesh and across India, encouraging them to adopt sustainable urban development practices.
