Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV), India’s pioneering university in the transportation and logistics sector, will soon establish the Centre of Excellence in Transport Safety (CoETS). Sponsored by the Ministry of Railways, the central university aims to drive educational programs, policy-making initiatives, capacity-building efforts, and use-case-oriented research focused on transport safety, including its technological and multimodal aspects.
GSV’s unique mandate is to enhance the ecosystem of multimodal logistics across all transport modes—rail, road, air, water, ports, and shipping. It will address the three critical dimensions: Infrastructure (Technology), Services (Management), and Regulatory Reforms (Policy), significantly boosting India’s logistics performance.
The transportation sector faces considerable safety challenges, with road accidents disproportionately affecting young adults, thereby impacting families and the national workforce. While railway safety has improved, aviation sector growth necessitates stringent safety measures. CoETS at GSV is set to address these challenges by introducing proactive, data-driven strategies and cutting-edge technologies, contributing to saving lives, reducing economic losses, and enhancing the overall quality of life.

The vision of CoETS is to enhance transportation safety through innovation and best practices, with a mission to offer executive training, conduct world-class research, develop effective safety solutions, and build capacity across all modes of transportation.

Expected Outcomes of CoETS Include:
- Evaluation of existing safety measures and recommendations for improvements.
- Development of advanced safety systems, including intelligent transportation systems, driver-assistance technologies, and predictive maintenance models.
- Technical assistance to government agencies for implementing safety regulations and standards.
- Specialised training programs for transportation professionals, including safety managers, engineers, and policymakers.
- Establishment of a comprehensive safety research database.
