Dr. Atul Verma, an IPS officer of the 1991 Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of the state, superseding three other officers. Mr. Verma, who previously served as the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), assumes his new role following the retirement of Sanjay Kundu, an IPS officer of the 1989 batch, who served as the former DGP for 35 years until his retirement on Tuesday.

The orders for Verma’s appointment were issued after obtaining necessary permissions from the Election Commission of India (ECI), ensuring adherence to protocol. In terms of seniority, IPS Atul Verma ranks fourth after IPS officers Tapan Kumar Deka (IPS: 1988: HP), S R Ojha (IPS: 1989: HP) and Shyam Bhagat Negi (IPS: 1990: HP). Deka and Negi are currently serving on central deputation, while Ojha holds the position of director general (prisons) within the state.
