Energy Transition

In a significant development, the Union government has unveiled plans to embrace cutting-edge technologies, including Small Nuclear Reactors, as part of its commitment to a clean energy transition.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh provided this crucial update in a written response to a query during today’s Lok Sabha session. Dr. Singh, who holds the portfolios of Science & Technology, Atomic Energy, and Space, among others, highlighted the growing global consensus on nuclear power as a promising clean energy solution.

The focus internationally is shifting towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) have emerged as a compelling option. SMRs are characterized by their modularity, scalability, compact footprint, and enhanced safety features, making them ideal for repurposing retiring coal-based thermal power station sites. By deploying SMRs, particularly in areas unsuitable for large nuclear plants, substantial amounts of low-carbon electricity can be generated, paving the way for the phasing out of fossil fuel-based power plants.

It’s worth noting that while SMRs hold great potential, they are not intended to replace conventional large-scale nuclear power plants, which serve as base load facilities.

Safety remains a paramount concern in the nuclear power sector, with rigorous regulatory standards in place to contain radiation and protect the public from exposure. The techno-commercial aspects of SMRs are still in their infancy globally, with their large-scale deployment contingent on various factors, including international regulatory harmonization, led by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and public acceptance, particularly regarding emergency planning zones.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) represent a promising technology, especially in the context of industrial decarbonization, where a constant and dependable power supply is imperative. India is actively exploring steps to develop SMRs, aligning with its commitment to a cleaner energy future.
