Punjab’s Finance, Excise, and Taxation Minister, Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema, announced today that the state has received a substantial sum of ₹3,670.64 crores as pending compensation under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. This compensation covers the period from July 2017 to March 2022.

Minister Harpal Singh Cheema highlighted that the compensation period under GST had officially concluded on June 30, 2022. However, Punjab’s Department of Excise and Taxation, under the Government of Punjab, continued to pursue the matter of the pending GST compensation with the Government of India. As a result of persistent efforts, the Government of India issued sanction orders for the release of ₹3,670.64 crores to Punjab on October 11, 2023.

Expressing his appreciation, Harpal Singh Cheema conveyed gratitude to the Union Finance Minister, as well as the offices of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the Principal Account Generals of Punjab for facilitating the disbursement of the pending compensation. He also commended the dedication and exemplary work of the officers at both the field and head offices of the Department of Excise and Taxation, Punjab, in securing the compensation.

Cheema recognized the instrumental role played by Financial Commissioner Taxation Vikas Partap and Commissioner Taxation Arshdeep Singh Thind in achieving this milestone. He specifically mentioned the contributions of Additional Commissioner (Audit) Ravneet Singh Khurana and DCFA Harpreet Kaur for their unwavering efforts.

Furthermore, the Finance Minister praised the efforts of officers from the Finance Department, including Principal Secretary Finance AK Sinha, Secretary Expenditure Mohammad Tayyab, and Special Secretary Finance Yashanjit Singh, in facilitating the release of the pending compensation amount.
