India is on the cusp of a momentous achievement as its third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, prepares for a significant soft landing on the Moon’s south polar region today, August 23. Scheduled for approximately 6:04 pm, this mission marks a critical milestone for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Following its launch in July, Chandrayaan-3 has undertaken an impressive journey, culminating in its current lunar landing endeavor. The key player in this mission, ISRO’s Vikram Lander Module, is set to touch down on the lunar surface at around 6:04 pm today. Once safely on the Moon, the module will unleash the Pragyan rover to further explore the lunar landscape.
However, the ultimate challenge lies in the final phase of the landing. Roughly 20 minutes prior to touchdown, ISRO will initiate the Automatic Landing Sequence (ALS), a pivotal moment in the mission’s success. This sequence empowers the Vikram Lander Module to take charge autonomously, leveraging its onboard computers and intelligent algorithms to pinpoint a suitable landing site and execute a gentle landing maneuver.

Experts emphasise that the last 15 to 20 minutes of the mission are of paramount importance as the Vikram lander readies itself for a delicate lunar touchdown. The anticipation and hopes are high across India and beyond, with people worldwide offering their prayers for the success of Chandrayaan-3’s landing operation.

This attempt is underpinned by ISRO’s recognition of the challenges faced during India’s second lunar mission, where a setback occurred during the final stages of landing. To mitigate these risks, ISRO is taking extra precautions throughout the process. Due to the nail-biting nature of the last moments of approach, these moments are often referred to as the “20 or 17 minutes of terror.” This phase will see the mission become fully autonomous, requiring the Vikram lander to skillfully ignite its engines at precise altitudes and times.
With India’s collective hopes and prayers, the nation stands poised to make history once more in the realm of lunar exploration.
