In a recent update, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) revealed that it is currently overseeing 202 National Highway projects, encompassing a massive 6,270-kilometer stretch, with an estimated cost of INR 79,789 crore. According to Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, these projects have construction timelines ranging from 18 to 30 months from the appointed date.

Among the ongoing projects, 42 National Highway projects, spanning a distance of 474 kilometers and valued at INR 10,992 crore, are currently in the bidding stage. Additionally, 11 National Highway projects, covering 245 kilometers and costing approximately INR 3,816 crore, are about to reach the stage of declaration of the appointed date in Maharashtra.

These updates were communicated by Gadkari in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, emphasizing that the progress of National Highway projects is being closely monitored by the authorities. To expedite the process and address any issues, periodic reviews are being conducted at various levels.

Generally, a time frame of 2-3 years is set for the completion of new National Highway projects. However, there are instances of delays due to various factors, such as government condition precedent fulfillment delays, clearances, utility shifting, land acquisition delays, and contractor or concessionaire-related issues, including cash flow problems.

Gadkari highlighted a specific case where four National Highway projects passing through Dhenkanal district in Odisha are facing delays primarily due to land acquisition, forest clearance, and slow contractor performance. The revised target for the completion of these projects is now March 2024.

As for the cost escalation resulting from the delays in these projects’ completion, Gadkari stated that the final figures are yet to be determined. The Ministry remains committed to overcoming challenges and ensuring the timely completion of these vital infrastructure projects for the nation.
