Chandrayaan-3

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is making final preparations for the upcoming launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon, according to its senior official. The satellite has arrived at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, and it will soon be integrated with India’s most powerful rocket, the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III (GSLV Mk-III). The ambitious lunar mission is scheduled for launch in July and aims to achieve a successful landing on the lunar surface.

The chairman of ISRO, S Somnath, expressed confidence in the upcoming mission, stating that all necessary corrections and simulations have been addressed to ensure a smooth operation. The goal is to ensure a safe landing, and if any doubts arise, the launch will be postponed. The senior ISRO official confirmed the arrival of Chandrayaan-3 at Sriharikota and highlighted the ongoing integration process with the launch vehicle.

ISRO has announced that the lander accompanying Chandrayaan-3 will possess the capability to softly land at a designated lunar site and deploy a rover. The rover will conduct in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during its mobility. The lander and rover will be combined with the existing Orbiter from the Chandrayaan-2 mission in 2018, which will be repurposed for use with Chandrayaan-3. The Chandrayaan-2 mission was notable for its unique combination of an orbiter, a lander, and a rover.

The lander in the Chandrayaan-3 mission will carry various instruments, including Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment to measure thermal conductivity and temperature. Additionally, the Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity will estimate seismicity around the landing site, while a Langmuir Probe will calculate plasma density and variations. The rover will feature the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer and the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy instrument, enabling the determination of the elemental composition near the landing site.
