FM Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday underscored the role of digital connection in an effort to help emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs) effectively navigate the complexities between growth and climate security.

Addressing the G7 seminar on economic welfare policy in Niigata, Japan, she emphasised that technology had made it easier for the underprivileged to access markets and essential services.

India’s focus on technology, digital public infrastructure and green hydrogen as a foundation for sustainable and inclusive growth are examples of innovative policy toolkits by EMDEs.

The minister also discussed the need to look beyond GDP figures and the empowerment of individuals through increased digital access in underdeveloped countries.

Ms. Sitharaman is in Japan for two days to attend the G7 gathering of finance ministers and governors of central banks.
