Amdocs’ offerings making cloud adoption easy

Samit Banerjee

Transitioning to the cloud is a road laden with challenges, but with Amdocs’ cloud offerings organisations should continue the journey, shared Samit Banerjee, Division President, Cloud Operations Services & Head of Customer Service Unit, Amdocs in an exclusive interview with Abhineet Kumar of Elets News Network (ENN). Edited excerpts:

Can you give us an overview of Amdocs’ cloud offerings and how they differ from other cloud providers in the market?

Amdocs offers end-to-end cloud professional services from consulting to migration, operation, enablement, security, cloud platform engineering, FinOps, and cloud operations. Our offering improves end-user experiences and journeys across all channels and applications, streamlines business processes, and monetizes existing services and new 5G use cases. We recently launched our cloud-native and cloud-agnostic CES23, the most advanced version of the Amdocs Customer Experience Suite spanning BSS, OSS, and network, and we also offer a cloud-native full telco BSS SaaS solution. We enable CSPs to evolve constantly by promoting migration of their core systems to the cloud (core to the cloud).

In an era of limitless communication, network and operational agility are key requirements for CSPs to support the needs of digital societies. Service delivery and customization speed must meet customer demand regardless of complexity. How is Amdocs’ solutions addressing these challenges?

Our products and solutions are built for cloud deployment and rapidly evolving 5G services, giving our customers flexibility, and the ability to improvise and manage complexity. Our solutions embrace intentdriven automation, which means that the system works towards meeting a customer’s business intent throughout the entire service lifecycle. The system can then autonomously decide how to fulfill and assure services based on network and cloud status, bringing a high degree of agility when launching, delivering, and operating the network and associated services. CSPs using our products can quickly design, create, and launch new services through a userfriendly UI, which makes them agile and responsive to customer needs. This gives them an edge in defining new services and onboarding new physical, virtual, and cloud network functions. Our solutions leverage advanced technologies like machine learning and automation to optimise network operations, reducing manual effort and improving efficiency.

How has Amdocs’ cloud strategy evolved over the past few years, and what factors have influenced these changes?

Since 2017, all Amdocs product development has been cloud native. Cloud is one of our key strategic areas, and we aim to “take the industry to the cloud.” We enable service providers to generate new services, competitive opportunities, and customer experiences during their cloud journey. To bolster our cloud expertise, over the years we acquired a number of companies, and the Amdocs cloud division is today comprised of three acquired companies (SourcedGroup, DevOpsGroup and Kenzan) as well as Amdocs cloud experts.

We have strategic relationships with all the leading cloud providers, including AWS, Azure, and GCP. Over the years, we have invested heavily in employee training in cloud and cloud computing methodologies. Apart from telecom, we also work with financial services on cloud capabilities.

Can you discuss some of the biggest challenges that organisations face when moving to the cloud, and how Amdocs helps to address these challenges?

Transitioning to the cloud is a road laden with challenges, but organisations should continue the journey. They need skills and expertise that make this transition seamless and cost-effective. Let’s break down a few main obstacles:

  • Lack of expertise to develop a cloud strategy and roadmap, and execute it

a) Amdocs offers services that help CSPs at every step of cloud adoption: consulting services to help build the strategy and roadmap, engineering services to set up and configure the cloud, migration services to evaluate the strategy for taking apps to the cloud, and CloudOps services to run and optimise operations

  • Employees lacking cloud computing skills

a) We help with employee enablement, training in DevOps, CI-CD, joint teams for development, and establishing cloud centers of excellence. l Ensuring security and compliance

b) This is a considerable challenge, especially in regulated domains with standard compliance such as personal identifiable information (PII) to protect, payment handling, etc. We bring in years of experience to handle it at all levels

  • Managing cloud spend

a) A potential key benefit of the cloud is cost reduction and cost control, but “bill shock” is an all-too-common phenomenon. Amdocs FinOps solution and our finOps advisory can help prevent it and track costs to ensure optimised use of cloud resources.

How is Amdocs contributing to the growth and development of the Indian economy through its transformation efforts in the telecom sector?

Technology and digital infrastructure will be the key drivers pushing inclusive economic growth in India. This will create innumerable opportunities for businesses, increased demand for skilled workforce, and revenue generation. The 5G rollout will usher in a new era for the Indian economy with substantial growth, industrial development, and enhanced prospects for skilled labour. To achieve this, we will need improved telecom networks, integrated operations, and next-gen digital customer experience. Leveraging our extensive experience with the world’s leading telcos, we are committed to supporting our partners in successfully deploying 5G networks in India.
