MeitY releases draft rules on data anonymisation and mobile security

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) on 30th August 2022, released two draft documents for guidelines on mobile security guidelines (MSG) and anonymisation of data (AoD) for e-Governance projects.

The e-Governance Standards and Guidelines is a project formulated by the Standardisation Testing & Quality Certification (STQC) Directorate and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) with the aim to reimagine the existing standards, guidelines and/or frameworks pertaining to various sectors of e-governance.

The MSG draft covers challenging aspects of mobile security and is touted as a single point of contact for all stakeholders involved in mobile services in India. It aims to achieve mobile security viz., confidentiality, accountability, integrity and accountability. It has also categorised mobile security into three broad areas such as mobile device security, mobile communication security and mobile service security. Whereas the AoD guidelines delve into the anonymisation aspect of data.

“These guidelines are launched with the objective of making privacy protection more robust and resilient in case of processing, publishing, storing or sharing data with other entities,” the document read.
