Rural women make masks for financial independence under UP’s State Rural Livelihoods Mission

UP’s State Rural Livelihoods Mission

The State Rural Livelihood Mission (SRLM) has helped rural women get financially strong even during pandemic times. Under SRLM, Self Help Groups (SHGs) created across the state manufactured masks and PPE kits on a large scale along with organising awareness programmes at the village level in the state, making themselves financially strong.

In the year 2020-21, more than 1.23 crore face masks were made by 20,386 members of various SHGs across the state. On the other hand, over 50,714 PPE kits were produced by 1,223 members of SHGs. Besides, as much as 19,921 litres of sanitiser was also produced by 559 members of these groups. So far this year, more than 15 lakh masks have been manufactured by the WSHGs.

Director, State Rural Livelihood Mission, Bhanu Goswami, said “We are continuously working towards promoting awareness regarding beneficial schemes of the state government among the rural women and providing them new opportunities of employment by connecting them with small cottage industries. Now, more and more women are becoming self-reliant.”

Under the mission, masks were provided to the staff of the Police Department, Health Department, Panchayati Raj Department, Vikas Bhawan and other departments on behalf of the women of SHGs. With the manufacturing of masks, each member of these women SHGs are earning an average monthly income of Rs 6000. To make women self-reliant, more than 1.98 lakh members of SHGs have been provided loans through the mission.
