States & UTs, ensure migrants board special trains, buses: Union Home Secretary

Ajay Bhalla, Union Home Secretary, said that as the migrant workers walking on streets, highways and railway tracks is a common sight, the Centre has asked the States and Union Territories to provide food and shelter to migrant workers upon seeing them. Also, ensure that they board special trains to their respective destination. Bhalla stated this in a letter to all the State and Union Territories.

He said that the states and the UTs were advised earlier regarding the issue of the migrant workers. They were asked to convince the labourers to not walk back home but board special trains that the government is running also enough food and water should be provided to each of them in need. “Now it is the responsibility of all the states and union territories that the migrant labourers who want to go to their state should be arranged”, he added.

Further, Bhalla said that in coordination with the States and UTs, the Ministry of Railways is operating more than a hundred ‘shramik’ special trains a daily basis. Moreover, additional trains are also being operated as and when needed. “I urge you to make sure that no migrant worlers are found on the roads and railway tracks anymore and they should be provided with all possible help to board special buses or trains to travel back home”, said Bhalla.
