Delhi govt installs 2 sanitisation tunnels at Azadpur mandi


In a bid to prevent the further spread of COVID-19, the Government of Delhi, on Friday, installed two sanitisation tunnels at the gates of Azadpur Mandi which is Asia’s largest wholesale market. Each and every person entering the market have to go through the sanitisation tunnel.

On the installation of the project, Gopal Rai, Development Minister, Delhi said that if the preventive measure taken turns out to be successful, more such tunnels will be installed at all the other mandis in the city. The Minister, further said that the Azadpur mandi is operational as it is the hub from where all the essential items are supplied to the city. Every person entering or exiting the mandi has to go through the tunnel, this will prevent the COVID-19 spread in the area, he added.

The sanitisation tunnels have been developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. The shop owners and traders have been asked to maintain social distancing. The Minister also informed that the authorities have marked circles to ensure social distancing. Special attention will be given to cleanliness at the market apart from ensuring that those visiting the mandi or employed there wore masks, added the Minister.


The government is taking measures to educate and make people aware of the COVID-19 situation. Also, it is being taken care that nobody is without food. “I have instructed all labourers and traders to wear masks. The Delhi government is distributing masks among people here. To sensitise the workers here, we are distributing pamphlets and disinfectants are being sprayed at the mandi daily. We are also providing morning and evening meals to the drivers and labourers,” he said.
