In a bid to relieve daily waged workers from the hardship caused by the lockdown due to COVID-19 outbreak, Indira Canteen, a food subsidisation programme run by Government of Karnataka, has started providing free food to daily waged workers from today, March 24.

As per the Canteen, breakfast for free of cost will be provided from 7.30 am to 10 am in the morning; from 12.30 pm to 3 pm lunch will be served, and the dinner will be provided from 7.30 pm to 9 pm. The Canteen will be functioning seven days a week. However, presently the Indira Canteens are providing breakfast at ₹5 and lunch and dinner at ₹10. Also, the menu of the Canteen is to remain the same as of yet.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has asked the staff at Indira Canteens to provide soaps and sanitisers as well at the canteens. Further, the civic body has asked the staff to check that people coming to collect the food must maintain at least a meter gap from each other. Moreover, the Canteen staff have been asked to wear gloves and masks, especially while providing the service. Assuring about the quality and hygiene, the BBMP said that the food will be tested by Health Department Officials.

Venkatesh S, Special Commissioner (finance), BBMP, and in charge of Indira Canteens, said that at the beginning there will be 10 percent more indent on the number of plates. “Within one or two days, we will get a picture of how many plates are used and how many people visit each canteen on an average,” he said, adding that there will be revised indents on a day-to-day, time-to-time basis, depending on the response. The Commissioner added that an increase of 30 percent in the footfall is expected over the next few days.
