Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren recommends dropping sedition charges against CAA protesters

Hemant Soren, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, has recommended dropping sedition charges against 3,000 unidentified persons who participated in anti-CAA protests in the Wasseypur area of Dhanbad district.

Soren, who was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of the state last week, has sent a letter to the state administration, asking to drop the sedition case and take action against the concerned official.

The Jharkhand Chief Minister tweeted, “Laws are not made to frighten and silence the people but to instill a feeling of safety in the public. My government will work towards being the voice of the people. We have recommended taking back the sedition cases registered against 3,000 people and also asked for action against the concerned official. I also urge the people of Jharkhand that it is their state and abiding the law and order is their duty.”

The District Administration had registered cases against seven identified and 3,000 unidentified protestors for staging an anti-CAA protest march on Tuesday night without permission from the requisite authority.

Soren took oath as Chief Minister on December 29, 2019. This is his second term as the state’s Chief Minister. His earlier term was from July 2013 to December 2014. His father Shibu Soren has also served as Jharkhand Chief Minister earlier. Soren is also the President of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Hemant Soren had graced the Elets eJharkhand Summit 2014 as Chief Guest. He was serving his first term as the state’s Chief Minister at that time. Listen to his address in the video below:
