Maharashtra Chief Secretary UPS Madan takes voluntary retirement

UPS Madan

Maharashtra Chief Secretary UPS Madan has chosen to retire voluntarily after taking charge from DK Jain about a month back, forcing the State government to approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) to get an approval for appointing Madan’s successor.

As per media reports, the three names sent for ECI’s approval include Additional Chief Secretary (Housing) Sanjay Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Satish Gavai and Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta. All the three officers are of the 1984 batch of the Indian Administrative Services.

Although the reason for Madan’s retirement is a matter of speculations, the ECI had earlier put on hold a proposal of the Maharashtra Government to appoint Madan, who was then serving as the finance secretary.

Jain, who was Madan’s predecessor, was appointed as the judicial member of Lokpal. But the poll panel had raised queries asking the reason for extending Jain’s retiremet after January 31, 2019.

Madan’s name was also dragged into a controversial case, in which he was alleged to have used his position to favour a certain private company. However, the case had been set aside by the High Court of Bombay.
