The Congress Party has announced the name of Raipur Municipal Corporation Mayor Pramod Dubey as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Raipur constituency, which the Bharatiya Janata Party has been winning since 1996.
Dubey, who played an important role in shaping Raipur as a smart city under the Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission, started his political career in 1985-86 as the vice-president of the college student union. In 2001, he was made the vice president of the Youth Congress in Chattisgarh.
After winning the election for the post of Mayor in 2015, he played an instrumental role in projects like multi-level parking, central library, outdoor gym, Subhash Stadium.
The Congress Party has entrusted Dubey with the responsibility to wrest the Raipur seat from incumbent BJP, which has been holding the Lok Sabha seat since 1996.
Ramesh Bais, who has won the Raipur Lok Sabha seat seven times in the past, has been denied the party ticket this time by the BJP.
