Dr Ajay Bhushan Pandey appointed first CEO of UIDAI

Dr Ajay Bhushan PandeyDr Ajay Bhushan Pandey, an IAS officer of 1984 batch from Maharashtra cadre, has been appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). He is currently serving UIDAI as the DG & Mission Director (DG & MD).

A government notice said: “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved appointment of Dr A B Pandey, IAS, Director General and Mission Director, Unique Identification Authority of India, as Chief Executive Officer, UIDAI, with effect from July 12, 2016.”

In compliance to a legislation passed recently in the parliament, the post of DG & MD has been re-designated as CEO.

A doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis of the US, Dr Pandey has been involved with UIDAI established under the Aadhaar Act and implementation of Aadhaar since September 2010.


It was during his tenure as the UIDAI head when Aadhaar allocation crossed 100 crore and a new Aadhaar Bill was passed.

Dr Pandey also holds the additional charge of Chairman, UIDAI – a post that fell vacant after Nandan Nilekani resigned to join politics 2014.
