Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has made it mandatory for the telcos to provide data usage information to all mobile data users through SMS or USSD.

According to the directive, telecom operators have to provide toll free number ‘1925’ from September 1 to activate or deactivate mobile internet service either by making a call on the number and following instruction or by sending a SMS.

This measure has been taken as TRAI received complaints from consumers regarding non-availability of information relating to the amount of data used during a data session.

Telcos now will inform users after every 10MB of data consumption, except users of special data packs (STV/Combo/add-on-pack).

The consumers, however, can opt out if they do not desire to receive such information.
