G Mohan Kumar appointed new Defence Secretary

G-Mohan-KumarG Mohan Kumar, a senior IAS officer has recently been appointed as new Defence Secretary for a term of two years.

Kumar is a 1979 batch IAS officer of Odisha cadre, and is Secretary in the Department of Defence Production at the moment.

An order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training said, “The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has approved Kumar’s appointment as Defence Secretary for a period of two years from the date of taking over the charge of the post.”

He will take over from Radha Krishna Mathur, who is a 1977 batch IAS officer of Manipur-Tripura cadre and will be completing his two year tenure on May 28.

Earlier, Kumar has served in the Ministry of Commerce and also worked as Additional and Special Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation between 2010 and September 2013.

He hails from Kerala and has also served as Steel Secretary before taking over as Secretary in the Department of Defence Production on September 1, 2014.

Ashok Kumar Gupta, a 1981 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre will further replace Kumar as Secretary, Defence Production. Currently, Gupta is Special Secretary in the Department of Defence Production.
