Former Gujarat Chief Secretary Achal Kumar Jyoti has recently been appointed an Election Commissioner. He had retired from active service in January 2013.
A notification from the Law Ministry said, “The tenure of the 62-year-old officer will commence from the day he assumes his charge. He will have a tenure of around three years.”
An Election Commissioner or the Chief Election Commissioner has a tenure of six years in office or till he or she attains the age of 65, whichever is earlier.
Following H S Brahma resigning from the office of the CEC in April and elevation of Nasim Zaidi to the top post, two posts in the three-member Election Commission had become vacant.
