Come 2014 and Kochi Corporation will be ready with implementation of it’s e-governance project.
According to the officials of Kochi corporation, who are associated with this project, long wait will be over in a month or so. ‘ We are trying to cross the last round of hurdles before implementation of the project,’ said one officer associated with this project of e-governance. ‘system, database and applications, which are worth of 1 crore, developed for the e-governance project have been taken to Thiruvananthapuram to link them with state Data Centre,’ he added. Apart from this, Kochi Corporation is also planning to come up with new website-‘www.corporationofcochin.gov.’
This e-governance project was making headlines for all the wrong reasons, since its announcement in 2007. Various controversies mar its way for implementation. The `8-crore program, which is under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to deliver all major services offered by the Corporation available online, began with controversy itself. The pilot phase was supposed to start in August,2013, but the authorities opined that Corporation lacked the infrastructure to implement the pilot phase. Hence, later it was decided to link it with State Data Centre in Thiruvananthapuram and operate it from Kochi. But there again was opposition on spending more on the project.
But finally it is on the verge of getting implemented.
Experts say that, this e-governance project will bring in more transparency in the working of the Corporation, as well as it will make the offices a paper-less one. TCS has provided the technical solutions for the website and Wipro made the DPR ( Detailed Project Report). Issuance of online birth certificate, death certificate, marriage certificate and trade license will be the main services of the project.
