Multi-Lingual Portal for the Marginalised Launched in India

The President Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil launched the Government's multi-lingual Portal in New Delhi which will provide information on strategic needs of the poor and the marginalised in local languages.

The Portal titled as, “India Development Gateway (InDG)” will connect rural communities for sharing and accessing information in sectors such as – Agriculture, Rural Energy, Education, Health and e-Governance.

The services are available in the following languages – Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and English. It is stated that the service will be extended to more sectors and more languages very soon. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in association with the e-Governance division of the Department of Information Technology, Government of India has executed the initiative.

The President said that the Portal will help in linking Panchayats across the country and empower village people and open a window of opportunity to rural development. Mrs. Patil said, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) must help bring about a second green revolution in agriculture. She wanted the benefits of this technology to reach remote and far-flung areas.

The ceremonial launch of the Portal was attended by a host of partner organisations and senior officials.
