Cross Border eID to be checked: European Commission

In order to check national Electronic Identity (eID), the European Commission launched a pilot project 'Stork' (Secure idenTity acrOss boRders linKed) in 13 member states. The project will help cross-border provision of online services by establishing trans-border pilot projects based on existing national eID systems.

The Information and Communication Technologies Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP) be a key stakeholder in this project dealing with foreign public administrations through public offices personal computers and mobile devices.

The project will allow citizens to identify themselves electronically in a secure way using their national eID via electronic cards or other means without actually replacing existing national schemes.

The European Commission's states that this project will run for about three years. The Commission further stated that it will share the solutions and the experience derived from the project team with all member countries (whether they are participating or not in the pilot).
